
In the summer of 2025 sanitation workers in the city of Philadelphia went on strike and there was no trash pickup for a couple weeks. As recyclables began to pile up in my kitchen I began to think about the illusion of impermanence we are under when it comes to recycling. How much plastic waste actually gets recycled? And how much will out sit in a landfill for the next few thousand years? I took my plastic recyclables from during the strike and encased them in a coating of concrete to remind myself that this shit is probably permanent and we should probably stop using so much of it.

I had been making a bunch of this particular spoon design that had a fairly small bowl but a nice long handle, perfect getting into the corners of deep pots. I started to think, how long can I make a spoon where it stops being a functional spoon? I made a series of these longs spoons, each was around ~4ft long.
